WPM (Words Per Minute)
Definition
WPM stands for Words Per Minute — the standard unit for measuring typing speed. In the context of typing tests and software, one "word" is defined as five characters, including spaces. This standardized definition allows comparison across different texts and languages.
Why It Matters
WPM is the universal benchmark for comparing typists. When a job posting requires "60 WPM minimum," they mean gross or net WPM on a standardized test. Understanding WPM helps you set realistic goals and track progress over time.
Example
If you type 300 characters in 60 seconds, your WPM is 300 ÷ 5 = 60 WPM (gross). If you made 5 errors in that time, your net WPM would be lower.
