Home Row
Definition
The home row is the middle row of a standard keyboard, where touch typists rest their fingers between keystrokes. On QWERTY keyboards, the home row is: A S D F (left hand) and J K L ; (right hand). The F and J keys have raised tactile bumps to help typists find home position without looking.
Why It Matters
The home row is the physical anchor of touch typing. Returning fingers to home row after each keystroke is what allows consistent reach to any key without looking. Skipping this habit is one of the most common and limiting beginner mistakes.
Example
When you are not pressing a key, your left index finger should rest on F and your right index on J. Every reach away from home row should end with a return to this position.
